PVC to the rescue!

Nineteen degrees.
Yep. NINETEEN DEGREES. That's how cold it got here in Austin, Texas last night. And guess what? Plants don't like that. Being as I live in Texas, I'm not really on top of it when it comes to covering my beds in the winter. With the threat of NINETEEN DEGREES, however, I called The Natural Gardener to ask if my plants could handle it. They can't.
So... With only about an hour and a half of daylight, I had to run home, measure the beds, run to Lowe's for materials (plastic sheeting, pvc and clamps), water the plants (but not their leaves), and build structures to save their leafy little lives. So that I can eat them.
Does anyone else find that perverse?

I was still working on them after dark, but I got them done... and I assume the plants are still alive this morning... it's not light before I leave for work, so I couldn't check.

Then I went inside & made collard wraps and zucchini fettuccini with cashew aioli. After all that work in the garden, I was really tempted to just grab something unhealthy & put it in my mouth. I resisted, knowing how crappy I would feel afterward, and remembering that fixing something healthy doesn't really take that much time. I stuck a date in my mouth & made dinner!

Then I studied a bit and got a 96% on my biology test.

Then Philip came home, and we watched an episode of Carnivale - after I folded a crapton of towels.

It was a productive evening.

I discovered that my new DVD from Ranya DVD is corrupted or somejunk. :( I hope she can replace it quickly.

I have an urge to (re) learn how to sew. Especially after reading this blog.

Oh, I know how that is, to race to cover the plants! It doesn't get 19 degrees where I am in California, but when the overnight temperatures are going to be at freezing or below, I have to cover 4 citrus trees as well as an avocado tree with sheets so that they don't die! I get damage on some of my other frost-tender plants during the freeze in December, but they should come back.

I hope your plants made it through okay! :)
