Effing Deer Hat Complete!

The hat is BIG.
Jenn needs to learn to KNIT A GAGUE SWATCH for Pete's sake...
But that's okay. It's wool, so he can shrink it. It turned out really cool! It's so thick and warm! I even put a poof ball on top... :)

Effing Deer!

Working dilligently on dad's (late) Xmas gift...

At some point, I realized that this pattern is actually of two male deer doin’ it… I’m all for it, but my parent’s are pretty darn Catholic, and my dad will know the difference, so I made the one on the bottom a girl.

Xmas

Well, it was pretty good this year. Very low-key, which I like. My parents didn't come to visit - which I actually prefer, since a visit from them around the holidays brings on mad chaos.
Philip and I opened gifts from each other and from my parents on xmas eve. I'm always amazed that I actually have a bf that buys good gifts ALL BY HIMSELF. I don't have to hint like mad, or buy them myself and inform him of what he's purchased or pine over something that he's never going to get me. It's fantastic.
We mostly just watched movies while I immersed myself in knitting. He's got 7 DAYS off for xmas... which I'm terribly jealous about... Although, it does mean that we might be able to put the last piece of granite in the master vanity... (and by "we" I totally mean "Philip and Thomas")
Xmas day, we went to Schertz to be with my family for dinner. We spent the entire morning laying around like total slugs and barely even washed a dish - it was fantastic! There were some family members in this year that I haven't seen in quite some time, so that was really nice. My aunt's partner Joan came this year. That was really nice, because she couldn't come last time and she's so funny and nice and fits right in with the rest of my silly family. Anyway, it was a pretty good time. My grandfather is getting pretty frail, so it's good to see him when I can. Ann B (grandmother) is still the spitfire she's always been! We ate and ate and ate and opened gifts and ate and drank and ate. Did I mention eating? Because that's mostly what we did. Eat. Lots. Of. Food. Philip and I headed home early for some CSI and knitting. Well, he doesn't knit. Yet...
Pretty darn good xmas.

Cowel for Katherine

Philip asked me to knit a gift for one of his co- workers, and I jumped at the chance to turn this soft, fluffy yarn into a gift! I found this at a thrift store in Cottage Grove years ago, but have never quite had the perfect project for it... Now I do!

Mom's Fingerless Gloves

Fantastic Bellydance!

My friend April and I just got through watching one of the most amazing bellydancers I've ever seen! Zein Al jundi is the proprietor of Arabic Bazaar, as well as a bellydancer and singer. This is the first opportunity I've had to see her dance - they have a free show every Sunday during their Christmas Bazaar.
She was fantastic! She looked like she was blissfully dancing for the pure joy of the dance, not performing. Her shimmies were amazing and she smiled and flirted with the audience members. I learned so much, just by watching her dance!

Stay Classy, Galveston!

From Houston Press:

Police Get The Wrong House In Galveston, Allegedly Assault 12-Year-Old Girl

Wed Dec 17, 2008 at 12:37:01 PM

It was a little before 8 at night when the breaker went out at Emily Milburn's home in Galveston. She was busy preparing her children for school the next day, so she asked her 12-year-old daughter, Dymond, to pop outside and turn the switch back on.

As Dymond headed toward the breaker, a blue van drove up and three men jumped out rushing toward her. One of them grabbed her saying, "You're a prostitute. You're coming with me."

Dymond grabbed onto a tree and started screaming, "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy." One of the men covered her mouth. Two of the men beat her about the face and throat.

As it turned out, the three men were plain-clothed Galveston police officers who had been called to the area regarding three white prostitutes soliciting a white man and a black drug dealer.

All this is according to a lawsuit filed in Galveston federal court by Milburn against the officers. The lawsuit alleges that the officers thought Dymond, an African-American, was a hooker due to the "tight shorts" she was wearing, despite not fitting the racial description of any of the female suspects. The police went to the wrong house, two blocks away from the area of the reported illegal activity, Milburn's attorney, Anthony Griffin, tells Hair Balls.

After the incident, Dymond was hospitalized and suffered black eyes as well as throat and ear drum injuries.

Three weeks later, according to the lawsuit, police went to Dymond's school, where she was an honor student, and arrested her for assaulting a public servant. Griffin says the allegations stem from when Dymond fought back against the three men who were trying to take her from her home. The case went to trial, but the judge declared it a mistrial on the first day, says Griffin. The new trial is set for February.

"I think we'll be okay," says Griffin. "I don't think a jury will find a 12-year-old girl guilty who's just sitting outside her house. Any 12-year-old attacked by three men and told that she's a prostitute is going to scream and yell for Daddy and hit back and do whatever she can. She's scared to death."

Since the incident more than two years ago, Dymond regularly suffers nightmares in which police officers are raping and beating her and cutting off her fingers, according to the lawsuit.
Griffin says he expects to enter mediation with the officers in early 2009 to resolve the lawsuit.

We've got calls in to the officers' lawyer; we'll let you know if we hear something.

Update: This is from the officers' lawyer, William Helfand:

Both the daughter and the father were arrested for assaulting a peace officer. "The father basically attacked police officers as they were trying to take the daughter into custody after she ran off."

Also, "The city has investigated the matter and found that the conduct of the police officers was appropriate under the circumstances," Helfand says. "It's unfortunate that sometimes police officers have to use force against people who are using force against them. And the evidence will show that both these folks violated the law and forcefully resisted arrest."

OUTRAGED? WRITE THE TX GOVERNOR

Little Brother

I can't believe you are the same small being that I used to call Teddy Bear Head and tote around like a cabbage patch doll. It's amazing to see you all grown up - renting your own place, buying a truck, embarking on a career...
I didn't really know you when I came home. It was like our last 8 years had been lived in a series of photographs and video clips. I have cherished this time we've had to get to know each other again, but it has also been incredibly painful to watch you go through these recent hard times.
I feel guilty for what you're going through. I think most people that have a close association with addicts feel the same way. I feel like I should have spent more time with you, should have watched you more closely, should have protected you like a big sister is supposed to. I feel that way about both of my brothers. Watching you hurt feels like a knife in my gut. It doesn't seem to matter that you are adults and make your own decisions no matter what my involvement might be. I just look back down a long history of mistakes, and think about all the things that I could have done different that may have resulted in a more positive reality now.
Last night, I was afraid to see you. I was scared to look at you and see the man that is my little brother. I was afraid that you would look at me and see disappointment and resentment and sadness. It was so good to see you though, and to talk mostly about things that don't relate to drugs or jail or rehab or lawyers.
The thought of facing our family on Christmas is gut-wrenching. They always ask about you - detailed questions that I don't have the answers to. I think they blame me, in part, for not taking better care of you. They always want to know what my opinion is about how you're "really" doing. I don't know what to tell them. I feel like there are two of you, and I don't know anything about the other you - the one that smokes crack and can't stop himself from drinking too much. It seems that my little brother Matthew is doing fine... but that other man that lives in his body... well, I just can't say...
Monday, you leave for 30 days in rehab. You're taking a bus down there because I can't take you. In my mind, you're just a little kid, going somewhere ALL BY YOURSELF, and it freaks me the fuck out to think of you alone in the world. My logical mind realizes that you're just as adult as me, but I can't shake this tightening in my throat at the thought of you going alone to rehab.
Everyone is hoping that you'll come out of there with skills to keep you sober. I know I am. I know you are.

I love you.

Hey, does this taste stale to you?

It's been brought to my attention that my bloggie may be getting a little stale...
Okay, okay! I'll blog!
I've been terribly busy....
No, really...

A short history of recent events:

The week before Thanksgiving, Philip, Chad and Thomas put gorgeous grey granite countertops into my kitchen!!! >swoon< They are so lovely, and the huge overhang has increased my counterspace remarkably. Thomas put up the tile backsplash and reconnected the plumbing. My kitchen is so fancy, I feel like I need to dress up to cook! I've taken to calling my home the Tiny Palace. The countertops were installed just in time for....

THANKSGIVING!
Thanksgiving was exactly what I wanted it to be - a house full of food and friends. I think there must've been 20 plus people that came by for at least a bit throughout the day. We had so much food that we ran out of places to put it! My overwhelmed pup got a little snappy and snippy with people, and I think that was the only mar on an otherwise perfect day! :)

and then.... I got a little message on my cel phone.... "Jenn, this is your little brother, and I'm in JAIL. I would really like it if you could come bail me out, because, like I said, I'm in JAIL. Again, this is your little brother, and I'm in JAIL."
A flurry of phone calls determined that there was nothing I could do that night, so I tried to put it out of my mind...

That evening, Ryq came into town, and immediately hit the bars in a sexy short skirt. Our old friend Che was in town for the weekend, but my exhausted self had to work in the morning, so I retired while they went to play.

The next day, I left work early to coordinate with the bailbondsman and Matt's boss (he paid the bail $$). They released him fairly quickly, and I picked him up to take him home.
He got pulled over for DWI some time after he snuck out of my Thanksgiving gathering like a ninja.
He's making me old.

I spent the rest of the day hanging out with Ryq and Philip. We drove down to the outlet malls to do some window shopping, and ate at this awesome Mexican restaruant in San Marcos that I can never remember the name of.
We came home for nappies, then Ryq and I hit the bars for some fun. Che joined us and I drank WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy too much!

Let's see.... what else is going on...

Baby news:
Yari's baby shower was super fun! She got lots of awesome presents, and we made all the guys play the embarassing games - like who can make the best diaper out of toilet paper in 2 minutes, and who can drink beer from a baby bottle the fastest...
Shaunna has a teeny bun in the oven!
Liz had her son on the 12th!
LeeAnn had her daughter on the 14th!
One of my co-workers has mysteriously disappeared... I think she might be having a baby too...

I applied for grad school - master's of nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health.

My last bellydance class in this series was on Monday... >sniffle<

Our holiday party for work was at Dave and Busters this year. Lots of people were disgruntled because it's usually a fancy affair at someplace like the Barton Creek Country Club. Me? I couldn't care less. I got to drink beer and shoot zombies, and I GOT PAID TO DO IT. No complaints here!

hmmm.... I think that might be all the big news... I'm knitting like mad, trying to finish gifts before xmas. I still have NO IDEA what to get Phil. damn it. I hate this stupid holiday.

Humbug.

oh yeah, and shop at the Arabic Bazaar!!

I promise to write a real blog soon, but I wanted to take a moment to post this advert for one of my FAVORITE STORES EVAR.
